About the Pack
Frightful Exploration is a Minecraft modpack focused on creating a horror experience where exploring is encouraged. ChoiceTheorum's Overhauled Villages and "YUNG's Better" structures may be alluring, but will you seek to discover them or will you take shelter from beings like The One Who Watches and The Midnight Lurker?
This modpack adds a selection of mods to improve performance, add/change structures, improve QoL, and most importantly scare the player. The aim is for the modpack to be frightening, while also being well-rounded and playable on older hardware. If you have any suggestions to improve the modpack, please make one here.

🚧 Configuring Auto-Update
⚠️ WARNING:
Using this feature may break your worlds if any world gen mod is added/removed! Please proceed with caution.
This feature requires MultiMC/Prism Launcher. I assume it works on the dedicated Modrinth launcher as well, but it is too unstable on my system to test. Do let me know the results if you test it and I can update this section.
Instructions:
- In MultiMC/Prism Launcher, click on the Frightful Exploration modpack and click edit. If you don't have it already, download it from Modrinth.
- In the edit window, click the
Settingsbutton on the left and go to theCustom Commandstab.
⚠️ WARNING:
Do NOT click the settings button at the top of the window, those are your global settings and pasting the command from step 3 into them will break ALL other instances!
- Click the checkbox at the top to allow overriding the global settings for this specific instance, and set your pre-launch command to the following:
$INST_JAVA -jar packwiz-installer-bootstrap.jar -g https://raw.githack.com/idiot-shinuki/frightful-exploration/main/forge/1.20.1/pack.toml
This command will run and check for an update from the GitHub repository every time you launch the instance.
📣 Attributions
- This pack wouldn't have been possible without the original idea from CrimsonDoc.
- Hammer from SkywardMC was used as a foundation for this pack, making many performance improvements possible. This pack is in no way endorsed by SkywardMC, however I would like to offer them my thanks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frightful Exploration server crashes or won't start – what to do?
Most common causes: insufficient RAM or wrong forge loader. Check latest.log for "OutOfMemoryError" → increase RAM to at least 8 GB. For "Mixin" or "ClassNotFoundException" errors: modpack version and loader don't match. With Mado Hosting, loader and Minecraft version are auto-configured on modpack install – preventing most startup issues.
How much RAM does a Frightful Exploration server really need?
Minimum 6 GB, recommended 8 GB for stable performance. per 5 players. Important: Minecraft modpacks need more RAM than vanilla – plan extra per additional player. With Mado Hosting, you can scale RAM up live at any time without data loss (from €12/month).
Can I add custom mods to Frightful Exploration without conflicts?
Yes, but check compatibility: only use mods for the same loader (forge) and same Minecraft version (1.20.1). Common issues: ID conflicts with recipe mods and incompatible coremod versions. The Mado dashboard mod browser only shows compatible mods and warns about known conflicts.
Frightful Exploration server lagging – performance tips
1) Increase RAM to 8 GB+. 2) Reduce server view-distance to 8 (server.properties). 3) Pre-generate chunks with the "Chunky" plugin. 4) Use /spark profiler to check which mods consume the most tick time. With Mado Hosting, all servers run on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores – eliminating hardware as a bottleneck.
