About this Modpack

Hard Times are... well, hard.

This modpack is designed to be fairly difficult by adding realism elements ontop of the game.

Focus on Realism (ooh)

Various features to add difficulty were added, such as being unable to heal and requiring bandages to heal, a thirst mechanic, and a temperature mechanic were added to have a focus on realism. In addition, various other things to make the game look more realistic were added, such as some resource pack & multiple shader options.

No HUD? No Problem. <3

You don't have a HUD in real life anyway, why should your Minecraft self have one? This modpack does away with the HUD, requiring you to look in your hand to see what you're holding. In addition, you won't be able to tell if you're hungry, hurt, or thirsty by just looking at a bar! Now you have to wait until you start experiencing symptoms, like being unable to sprint, to be able to tell if you need to eat, drink, heal, cool off, warm up, or even breathe.

Increased Overall Difficulty

Oh, Minecraft is too easy now, was it? Let's see how well you manage to live in this environment! <3

This modpack adds many things to make the world just that much more unfriendly to play with, such as:

  • Various passive mobs are now neutral.
  • Rare chance to spawn mutant mobs.
  • There is now hardcore darkness; make sure to bring those torches!
  • Various things that couldn't hurt you before now can! (Torches, stonecutters, etc.)
  • Difficulty is locked on hard mode. (assuming you don't cheat or whatever...)
  • Rarely, there will be blood moons that make the night horrifically dangerous.
  • Mob AI is smarter overall.
  • Torches burn out over time and get extinguished by water. Bring a flint & steel!
  • Villagers are unhappy with you pillaging from their chests, increasing trade costs and potentially causing iron golems to attack!
  • Added extra steps for getting wood & stone, and trees are harder to chop down.

World Overhauling

With multiple terrain, cave, and dimension overhauling mods and several structure mods, the Minecraft overworld, nether, and end hardly even look the same as before, granting so much more exploration opportunities just waiting to be discovered!

Happy Minecrafting! <3

Frequently Asked Questions

Hard Times server crashes or won't start – what to do?

Most common causes: insufficient RAM or wrong fabric loader. Check latest.log for "OutOfMemoryError" → increase RAM to at least 8 GB. For "Mixin" or "ClassNotFoundException" errors: modpack version and loader don't match. With Mado Hosting, loader and Minecraft version are auto-configured on modpack install – preventing most startup issues.

How much RAM does a Hard Times server really need?

Minimum 6 GB, recommended 8 GB for stable performance. per 5 players. Important: Minecraft modpacks need more RAM than vanilla – plan extra per additional player. With Mado Hosting, you can scale RAM up live at any time without data loss (from €12/month).

Can I add custom mods to Hard Times without conflicts?

Yes, but check compatibility: only use mods for the same loader (fabric) and same Minecraft version (1.20.1). Common issues: ID conflicts with recipe mods and incompatible coremod versions. The Mado dashboard mod browser only shows compatible mods and warns about known conflicts.

Hard Times server lagging – performance tips

1) Increase RAM to 8 GB+. 2) Reduce server view-distance to 8 (server.properties). 3) Pre-generate chunks with the "Chunky" plugin. 4) Use /spark profiler to check which mods consume the most tick time. With Mado Hosting, all servers run on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores – eliminating hardware as a bottleneck.
