About this Modpack

Onyx is a featureful Fabric client modpack designed to improve Minecraft performance, stability, and responsiveness while preserving the vanilla experience.

It builds on Opal but adds quality-of-life and visual client improvements such as HUD enhancements, zoom, and shader support. Designed for systems with higher performance headroom, Onyx delivers extra functionality without unnecessary overhead.

Players who prefer a strictly performance-only experience can use Opal, the lightweight version.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Key Features
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

• Significant performance improvements over vanilla
• Reduced memory usage and smoother gameplay
• Quality-of-life enhancements (HUD, zoom, etc)
• Fabric-based and multiplayer-safe
• Optimised to minimise performance impact

If you want only performance related features or are using a very low-end system, consider using Opal, which is the optimised base for a smoother experience.

Testing
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Tested on a laptop running Windows 11. Specs include:

  • Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU
  • Intel Iris Xe Graphics
  • 8GB RAM (2GB Allocated)

Achieved average frame rate between 400 - 450 in different scenarios including world generation (fps is capped at 120 in game)

Tested on a chromebook running ChromeOS. Specs include:

  • Intel Pentium Silver N5030 CPU
  • Intel UHD Graphics
  • 2770MB RAM (1024 Allocated, only around 800MB available)

Achieved average frame rate between 35 - 45 in normal gameplay and around 20 - 25 fps when generating the world and loading chunks

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Notes
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

• Client-side only
• Works on vanilla and modded servers (where client mods are allowed)
• Resource packs and settings included are optional and can be changed freely
• Support for older versions will take longer to release as newer versions take priority

Onyx is intended to be a featureful, dependable optimisation base that you can use as-is or build on with additional mods. Backup your worlds and configs when updating. This modpack is geared towards very low-end devices and therefore I will be very selective about the mods added to keep the total amount small and easy to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Onyx server crashes or won't start – what to do?

Most common causes: insufficient RAM or wrong fabric loader. Check latest.log for "OutOfMemoryError" → increase RAM to at least 6 GB. For "Mixin" or "ClassNotFoundException" errors: modpack version and loader don't match. With Mado Hosting, loader and Minecraft version are auto-configured on modpack install – preventing most startup issues.

How much RAM does a Onyx server really need?

Minimum 4 GB, recommended 6 GB for stable performance. per 8 players. Important: Minecraft modpacks need more RAM than vanilla – plan extra per additional player. With Mado Hosting, you can scale RAM up live at any time without data loss (from €8/month).

Can I add custom mods to Onyx without conflicts?

Yes, but check compatibility: only use mods for the same loader (fabric) and same Minecraft version (26.1.2). Common issues: ID conflicts with recipe mods and incompatible coremod versions. The Mado dashboard mod browser only shows compatible mods and warns about known conflicts.

Onyx server lagging – performance tips

1) Increase RAM to 6 GB+. 2) Reduce server view-distance to 8 (server.properties). 3) Pre-generate chunks with the "Chunky" plugin. 4) Use /spark profiler to check which mods consume the most tick time. With Mado Hosting, all servers run on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores – eliminating hardware as a bottleneck.
