About this Modpack
What is Whittled & Wistful?
Whittled & Wistful is a Vanilla-sideways modpack, which takes some of the main design paradigms of Vanilla and re-imagines the game in a more engaging way. Minecraft's sandbox is amazing, but a full survival playthrough lacks the fulfilling progression and freedom of choice required to make Minecraft a truly fantastic game.
Whittled & Wistful is a modpack that aims to change that.
Focusing on progression, exploration, and overhauling core features, this modpack makes old features feel fresh and unique without losing you in the minutiae of it all.
Like its main inspiration, Raspberry Flavoured, Whittled & Wistful makes very opinionated changes. The most noticeable of these is the lack of the End dimension or Elytras, which each encourage stagnation, complacency, and a lack of investment.
Whittled & Wistful does everything it can to reward your investment.
Gear in W&W is designed to be expressive and encourage a feeling like every armor set and tool set contributes to the playstyle that you build for yourself. Each item has an enchantment capacity, which you expand with the new Relics system (courtesy of Ascendant Arcana).
The loadout you bring to battle is not just a matter of the best materials you have, but rather is an expression of the playstyles you enjoy - whether that centers around moving fast, chugging potions, or embracing your inner arsonist.
The world has been redesigned and redecorated from the ground up, designed to make something beautiful, immersive, and truly fantastical.
Core Features
- Unique, completely overhauled combat system.
- This is done using Better Combat as a base, with a completely unique, brand new mod to extend and overhaul several of its core features and functions: ABCO.
- Revamped world generation
- Revamped enchanting system
- Using Ascendant Arcana, enchantments feel fresh and unique - removing the boring grind and randomness and replacing it with a desire to actually attain the gear you need.
- Expanded smithing templates
- Featuring Electrum from Oreganized, Mauveine from Astro! Reforged and many custom made smithing templates. Smithing Templates are no longer just a vehicle for trims and crafting Netherite. Instead, they're used as a way to upgrade armor in other ways like expanding the enchantment cap, making the item unbreakable, or even just recoloring your enchantment glint.
- Completely revamped armor and tools
- Also featuring Oreganized, Astro! Reforged and many completely custom-made tools and armor. Each armor set has unique passive benefits, including Netherite which now provides fire resistance instead of its original stats. Picking between them is now a matter of preference, rather than purely a matter of progression.
- Revamped progression
- Slowed early progression, using copper instead of stone, as well as a more complex and interesting progression that encourages self-expression and choice based on your available resources and playstyle.
- More animals, plants, and building blocks
- Featuring Twigs, vertical slabs and stairs, Farmer's Delight, Nature's Spirit, and Naturalist. Whittled & Wistful aims to expand your building options while minimizing added clutter.
- Improved visuals
- Social features like voice chat, instruments, and the ability to sit anywhere

Performance Issues?
If you're having performance issues with the pack and are on a lower end machine, I recommend the following solutions:
- Lower settings in StutterFix (in the options menu)
- Disable Distant Horizon generation, or disable Distant Horizons entirely
If you're having performance issues with the pack and are on a machine that should be able to handle it, I recommend the following solutions:
- Toggle Fullscreen type
- Toggle VSync
In a future version, graphical presets will be included to help ease performance issues and quickly get to a version of the modpack that works best for you.
This modpack is NOT complete, and will receive many updates in the near future, some of which may completely and fundamentally change the way it behaves! Players beware.
In addition; expect features that aren't complete, changes that get reverted, textures that aren't consistent with each other, and a lack of a clear guide. All of these issues will be fixed as time goes on and the modpack becomes more developed.

Most common causes: insufficient RAM or wrong fabric loader. Check latest.log for "OutOfMemoryError" → increase RAM to at least 8 GB. With Mado Hosting, loader and Minecraft version are auto-configured on modpack install – preventing most startup issues.

Minimum 6 GB, recommended 8 GB for stable performance. per 5 players. Important: Minecraft modpacks need more RAM than vanilla – plan extra per additional player. With Mado Hosting, you can scale RAM up live at any time without data loss (from €12/month).
Can I add custom mods to Whittled & Wistful without conflicts?
Yes, but check compatibility: only use mods for the same loader (fabric) and same Minecraft version (1.20.1). Common issues: ID conflicts with recipe mods and incompatible coremod versions. The Mado dashboard mod browser only shows compatible mods and warns about known conflicts.
Whittled & Wistful server lagging – performance tips
1) Increase RAM to 8 GB+. 2) Reduce server view-distance to 8 (server.properties). 3) Pre-generate chunks with the "Chunky" plugin. 4) Use /spark profiler to check which mods consume the most tick time. With Mado Hosting, all servers run on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores – eliminating hardware as a bottleneck.
