About this Mod
BetterLeads
A mod that allows you to use leads on more entities as well as chain leashes.
Currently, works with Merchant Entities (Villagers and Wandering Traders), most Hostile Mobs, Water Creatures (fish and
squid), turtles and pandas, you can configure which of these categories are enabled through ModMenu.
The Mobs which it doesn't work properly with are:
- Phantoms
- Ghasts
- Slimes
- Magma-cubes
- Shulkers
- Vexs
- and Bats
To chain leashes between entities leash an entity as normal then click on entity you want to leash it to whilst
sneaking, this feature is disabled by default. Leashes connecting entities do not persist across reloads and may be a
bit buggy.
Usage
Put the latest release
from Modrinth, GitHub
or CurseForge in your mods folder along
with Fabric API and ModMenu.
Configuration
The mod can be configured through the /betterleads command or by directly editing the betterleads.toml file in the
config directory, in singleplayer the mod can also be configured through modmenu.

How to Install BetterLeads on Your Server
Order Server
Order a Minecraft Java server with at least 3 GB RAM (4 GB recommended).
Set fabric Loader
In the panel under "Egg", select the fabric loader and matching Minecraft version (1.20.4).
Install Mod
Open the mod browser in the dashboard and search for "BetterLeads". Click "Install" – done! Alternatively, upload the .jar via SFTP to the /mods folder.

BetterLeads server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.20.4). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is BetterLeads compatible with fabric and quilt?
BetterLeads officially supports fabric, quilt for Minecraft 1.20.4, 1.20.1, 1.20. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with BetterLeads – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if BetterLeads consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge.
