About this Mod
Extinguished — a survival horror overhaul built around light, sanity, and allies. Stay in safe light or the world turns against you. Expect creeping ambience, sabotage in the dark, limb injuries, and a fully featured ally system you can command and upgrade.
Core concept:
- Safe light is 8+. Below that, "dark exposure" builds and escalates threats, especially at night.
- Client has immersive visuals and audio (vignette, whispers, static, hallucinations). Server enforces gameplay.
Major features:
Darkness and sanity
- Exposure rises in low light; triggers subliminal messages, static, footsteps, blackouts that require blinking, and rare apparitions (ghosts, shadow figures, a "self-watcher").
- Torches/lanterns within line-of-sight grant safety at night.
- Beds explode in the dark.
- Occasional sabotage near players in the dark: doors flick, lanterns can turn to soul lanterns, creepy signs appear.
- Night intensifies everything; some animals become hostile to "high-sanity" players; extra hostile mobs may spawn.
- World rifts: rare carved-out holes and vertical tears add danger spots.
Injuries, bleeding, and trauma:
- Limb-based injuries (sprains/breaks) from damage and hazards (e.g., standing on a stonecutter).
- Bleeding drains health and paints the area with particles until treated.
- Health cap scales down with injuries; recover by resting time, using items, or visiting a villager "medic".
- Persistence via scoreboard; cleanly resets on death.
Items and crafting:
- Glowstick: 30s Night Vision on use (stackable).
- Calming Incense: lowers your sanity meter to calm events.
- Ward Charm: recruit creatures as allies, view ally HP when aiming, upgrade allies (and used as upgrade currency).
- Clipboard: opens Ally/Army management UI from anywhere.
- Signal Whistle: pings your nearest buddy with Glowing.
- Splint/Bandage: mitigate injuries and bleeding.
- Death Map: crafted from a Map + Bone; shows an overlay of recent deaths.
- Baby Bottle of Milk: shrink to baby size and slowly grow back.
- Ground crafting: toss ingredients near each other to craft (e.g., 2 Sticks + String → 2 Splints; any Wool + String → 4 Bandages; Paper + any Logs/Planks → Clipboard).
Allies and "Army"
- Use Ward Charms to claim mobs as allies (follow/stay, never target the owner).
- Recall allies, mount one as a "backpack" defender, open an ally inventory screen.
- Assign gather jobs (wood/stone; optionally area-limited), cancel jobs, and deliver gathered items back to you.
- Ally progression: level by kill XP or spend Ward Charms; upgrades boost damage and max health. Full Army command screen with per-ally stats.
- Operate like a pet wolf for all ally members, make them stay or follow.
- Villagers can heal you if you are nearby.
Subtle world tweaks:
- Spiders and bats are smaller; adults of many animals scaled for more believable proportions.
- Poisons and growth: eating a Poisonous Potato triggers a slow, fatal "growth" curse; Baby Bottle temporarily miniaturizes you and gently returns you to normal.
Controls:
- C: Zoom
- V: Blink (clear blackouts)
- B: Breathe (manual; or choose automatic mode)
- G: Toggle stats arm HUD
- H: Injury details popout
- J: Army command screen
- K: Growth status
- O: Client settings
Commands:
- Client: /extmode automatic|manual|choose|status, /rules, /extconfig
- Server: /extprefs enable|disable (per-player), /extdev on|off|status (suppress heavy events for testing), /extadmin setgracedays
(progressive difficulty grace; default 2 in‑game days)
Configuration:
- Client config with granular toggles is saved to config/extinguished.json (visuals, sounds, overlays, UI prompts, grace countdown, etc.).
- Per-player opt-out via /extprefs if someone wants only visuals or no gameplay effects.
Recipes:
- Ward Charm: Amethyst Shard + Gold Nuggets + String
- Death Map: Map + Bone
- Glowstick, Calming Incense, Signal Whistle, Splint, Bandage, Clipboard, Baby Bottle — all have in-game recipes and advancements.
Requirements:
- Minecraft 1.21.1
- Fabric Loader ≥ 0.15.11 and Fabric API
- Java 21
Multiplayer:
- Works in single-player and on servers. Most mechanics are server-driven; client adds optional immersion. Safe to install client-only, but the full gameplay requires the mod on the server.

Extinguished server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.21.1). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is Extinguished compatible with fabric?
Extinguished officially supports fabric for Minecraft 1.21.1. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with Extinguished – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Extinguished consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
