Spirit Box
The spirit box is a mysterious device that channels stray whispers from the beyond. When placed in the world it will periodically say random words, offering eerie insights or unsettling nonsense. Right clicking the block will allow you to adjust the frequency or swap out the dictionary of words.
The box currently offers three modes.
- Words - A selection of over 2000 words. This dictionary includes things like items, locations, colors, names, actions, food, and much more. This dictionary focuses on words that are commonly used and does not have a strong bias towards words that are scary or creepy.
- Answers - A small set of answers to yes or no style questions. This dictionary includes words like yes/no/maybe, always/never/sometimes, and try again. It is very similar to a magic 8 ball.
- Alphanumeric - This dictionary only includes the 26 letters of the alphabet, various numbers, and related terms such as hundred, thousand, and dozen.
The box currently offers five scan speeds.
- Rapid - Updates every 5 seconds.
- Frequent - Updates every 10 seconds.
- Steady - Updates every 15 seconds.
- Infrequent - Updates every 30 seconds.
- Occasional - Updates once a minute.

The spirit box taps into the background noise of your game world, using subtle fluctuations in Minecraft's random number generator to select words. Paranormal researchers believe this digital randomness carries echoes of unseen entities trying to communicate through probability itself. This block samples that noise and runs it through an algorithm to produce words from a predefined dictionary. The spirit box is intended for entertainment purposes only. The developers take no responsibility for any messages, coinidences, or alleged hauntings that may result from its use.
Does the spirit box truly let you communicate with the other side? There's still no definitive evidence of that, however a few strange things did happen during development. The first prototype simply spoke random words without any controls for mode or speed. I left it running in the background while coding the rest of the features, and it often felt as though something was trying to guide me. When I made a typo or opened the wrong file it would say things like "this is wrong", "look out", and "be careful". It was as if the box itself wanted to be finished. The oddest moment came later on when it said "kitchen" three times in a row, a near statistical impossibility. I went to check our kitchen, and found that some food my husband was cooking had just started to smoke.
