About this Mod

Native Nicknames

This mod adds native nicknames to Minecraft, on the lowest level possible. Intercepts game profiles just after session authentication.

Nicknamed users will appear identically to the game as if you change your actual Minecraft username.

Intended for friend-only servers with a whitelist, there are no permission checks.

Please note that this mod only works with online-mode=true set in the server.properties.

Duplicates are prevented, but there's no protection against setting a nickname and then having the real user with that nickname join the server - this is unsupported, I do not know what would break if you tried.

It targets Fabric, NeoForge, Forge and Quilt, and supports all major versions since 1.14.4 (powered by Stonecutter & Architectury), as well as 1.12.2 and 1.7.10 (manual ports).

If this mod is missing a version you want to use it on, please open an issue and I will add it when I have time.

Usage

As a player, run /nick set <nickname> to set a nickname, and /nick clear to clear your nickname, then reconnect to the server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Native Nicknames server crashes on startup – what to do?

Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (26.2). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.

Is Native Nicknames compatible with fabric and forge and neoforge and quilt?

Native Nicknames officially supports fabric, forge, neoforge, quilt for Minecraft 26.2, 26.1.2, 26.1.1. Note: Forge and Fabric mods are NOT cross-compatible – pick one loader and stick with it. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.

Server lagging with Native Nicknames – how to optimize performance?

Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Native Nicknames consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
