About this Mod

⚙️ Notice

This datapack is intended for modded playthroughs, and requires certain mods to fully utilize. Some vanilla mechanics, like prior work penalty, completely handicap the design of this datapack. Necessary and recommended mods, as well as configs for said mods can be found at the bottom of this page.

📘 A few things to note:

  • "Levels to Max" is designed around enchanted books halving the anvil cost. This is achieved with Easy Anvils. This means that the ideal anvil cost, and "levels to max" values are actually half of what's recorded in this table. This is to explicitly encourage the player to enchant with books, over transferring enchants via items. (for lore and world building purposes). So by using enchanted books, as opposed to items, you could achieve an anvil cost of 2, and a total XP level investment of 110 for something like Bane of Arthropods, or Projectile Projection, as opposed to the listed value of 220. This applies to everything, so please keep this in mind when looking at the table.
  • A technical description of the changes, reasoning, and when you should use this datapack are at the very bottom. Please read it. This datapack might not be what youre looking for. But it is EXTREMELY easy to adjust it to better fit your needs. Mainly by changing the "anvil_cost" value for each file found in data\minecraft\enchantment

🧠 Technical Notes

  • This datapack/mod overwrites Vanilla files for each enchantment. That means it has no performance impact and no compatibility issues with unrelated projects. It can safely be unloaded from worlds, and the mod version can be installed and forgotten about. Removing this from worlds however, will not lower the level of items already generated or enchanted with these new levels.

  • This entire pack is designed around slowing down enchantment progression, as well as adding more long term progression. The cost to reach max level for some of these enchants is quite high, but please keep in mind, many of these enchantments extend far past vanilla values. They offer increased power and quality of life, and as a result, justify their increased cost. These are meant to be long term goals.

🧩 Recommended Mods

It is recommended to use these changes under certain cirumstances and with mods that increase the difficulty of the game. Here are my personal recommendations:

  • First off, Easy Anvils or something equivalent is absolutely necessary. This datapack pretty much requires you completely disable prior work penalty AND the "Too Expensive!" limit as to not reach the vanilla threshold of 40. On top of this halved_book_costs = true is enabled by default, and its recommended to keep this enabled as everything is balanced around this being on.

    1. Play on hard difficulty. For the mob AI changes, as well at the 50% boost to mob damage.
    2. Use a mod that enables mob scaling / attribute changes. I use Buff Mobs. You can disable or tune most features to your preference. But I recommend scaling mob health by 1.5 or 50%. This does not apply to bosses unless specified.
    3. Something like Fixed Levels will remove the unfair exponential curve that causes the player to spend more XP the higher their level. I recommend setting each level to a static value. 50 - 100. Wiki.
    4. Lastly, something like Simple Skills can allow you to further customize and restrict enchanting, and while this pack is balanced around this mod, you can still use it without and have a good experience. Using this mod just allows you to further restrict strong enchants like Mending and Protection. My config for the Enchanting skill in this mod can be found in the downloads, attached to the latest releases.

‼️Note

Vanilla Minecraft does not properly display enchantment levels past 10. Sharpness goes up to level 15 in this datapack, and as a result I have bundled a resource pack that extends the functionality of Icons by adding support for these extra levels. Please go download and show them support. It's an amazing resource pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enchant Overhaul server crashes on startup – what to do?

Most common cause: wrong datapack version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.21.10). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.

Is Enchant Overhaul compatible with datapack and fabric and forge and neoforge and quilt?

Enchant Overhaul officially supports datapack, fabric, forge, neoforge, quilt for Minecraft 1.21.10, 1.21.9, 1.21.8. Note: Forge and Fabric mods are NOT cross-compatible – pick one loader and stick with it. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.

Server lagging with Enchant Overhaul – how to optimize performance?

Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Enchant Overhaul consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
