Old New Combat
[BETA] Bringing Minecraft's abandoned Combat Tests to mod loaders.
About this Mod
Old New Combat
A mod that ports Minecraft's abandoned Combat Tests as a mod for 1.16 and 1.18.
A note on "Beta"
Mod is marked as "Beta" because not all features are implemented yet. However, I consider the mod to be stable, and even play on a personal modpack with this mod, not once having an error or crash. Once all features are finished, I will release version 1.0.0 and mark it as stable.
Current Features
For a comprehensive list of changes, see the Combat Tests wiki page. Some features are not yet implemented (see the GitHub page for a list). Some notable changes:
- Items now have an Attack Reach attribute. Currently only implemented on Forge.
- Attack Damage and Attack Speed has been tweaked for all weapons
- Axes always disable shields, new "Cleaving" enchantment increases stun duration. No more durability penalty.
- Bow accuracy increased, however decreases the longer you hold it (Animation temporarily disabled)
- Natural regeneration doesn't get a boost from saturation, however regenerates twice as fast and until 7 hunger instead of 18. Also causes less exhaustion.
- Shields only block up to 5 damage. However, they block all non-player explosion (e.g. Creepers)
- Shields only block damage in a 100-degree arc, instead of a full 180 degrees.
- Potions stack to 16, snowballs to 64.
- Potions and milk buckets consume twice as fast.

Old New Combat server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.19.2). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is Old New Combat compatible with fabric and forge?
Old New Combat officially supports fabric, forge for Minecraft 1.19.2, 1.18.2, 1.16.5. Note: Forge and Fabric mods are NOT cross-compatible – pick one loader and stick with it. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with Old New Combat – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Old New Combat consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
