Precious Tools
A little mod that lowers the durability of vanilla tools. Also when the durability is less than 50% then items are less effecient.
About this Mod
Precious Tools
Tired of tools feeling like disposable, endlessly replaceable items? Precious Tools overhauls the vanilla experience, making every tool a valuable asset you'll need to maintain and protect. This mod introduces two core mechanics that force you to think twice before you mine.
Features
Fully Customizable Durability
Take complete control over the lifespan of your tools. Through a simple configuration file, you can set the maximum durability for all standard tool materials:
- Wood
- Stone
- Iron
- Gold
- Diamond
- Netherite
The default values are set significantly lower to provide an immediate challenge, but you can tweak them to create the perfect balance for your gameplay or modpack. Make tools ultra-fragile for a hardcore survival experience or give them just enough durability for a short-term project.
Dynamic Efficiency (Wear & Tear System)
Your tools are no longer 100% effective until the moment they shatter. As a tool takes damage, its performance will degrade, simulating real-world wear and tear.
- Below 25% Durability: The tool becomes noticeably slower. You'll feel the struggle as you mine.
- Below 10% Durability: The tool is severely inefficient. It's on its last legs and is almost too slow to be practical.
This system encourages you to repair your tools before they're about to break, adding a new layer of strategy to resource management.
The Goal of the Mod
Precious Tools was designed to make you value your equipment. It counters the vanilla feeling where tools, especially in the late game, are abundant and disposable. By making them more fragile and less effective when damaged, the mod encourages a more thoughtful and strategic approach to resource gathering.
Every diamond pickaxe becomes a true treasure, and every mining trip requires careful planning. It's the perfect addition for survival-focused modpacks that aim for a more challenging and rewarding experience.
Configuration
Configuring the mod is easy!

--- DURABILITY SETTINGS ---
Set the maximum durability for tools of each material.
Vanilla values for reference: Wood=59, Stone=131, Iron=250, Gold=32, Diamond=1561, Netherite=2031.--- EFFICIENCY SETTINGS ---
Configure the thresholds at which tools become slower due to wear and tear.First threshold (gentle penalty)
Durability percentage threshold for the first penalty to apply (e.g., 0.25 = 25%).
efficiency_threshold_1
Speed multiplier when the tool is below threshold 1 (e.g., 0.6 = 60% of normal speed).
efficiency_multiplier_1Second threshold (heavy penalty)
A lower durability percentage for a stronger penalty (e.g., 0.10 = 10%).
efficiency_threshold_2
A lower speed multiplier for when the tool is below threshold 2 (e.g., 0.3 = 30% of normal speed).
efficiency_multiplier_2
- wood_durability=15
- efficiency_threshold_1=0.25
- gold_durability=20
- iron_durability=100
- diamond_durability=500
- netherite_durability=800
- efficiency_multiplier_1=0.6
- stone_durability=30
- efficiency_threshold_2=0.1
- efficiency_multiplier_2=0.3

Precious Tools server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.20.1). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is Precious Tools compatible with fabric?
Precious Tools officially supports fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with Precious Tools – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Precious Tools consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
