About this Mod

Title

Server Side Horror is a fully configurable and server-side mod that introduces ambient horror to your Minecraft world. It features only one jumpscare and a range of subtle and unsettling events. The mod also adds a few new structures. Best of all, players don't need to install anything, which means you can put this on your server without the players even knowing it's there.

SPOILERS

This mod is highly configurable. You can disable or change the odds of each event. You can also add or remove names, chat messages or sign texts. You can configure this mod directly in-game or by editing the JSON file located at config/serversidehorror.json in your profile folder. To learn how to configure my mods, check out this page, or if you want to read a more detailed description of this mod, check out its wiki.

Q: How does this mod differ from "From The Fog"?
A: While this mod includes a few events inspired by the story of Herobrine it doesn't exclusively focus on that. Server Side Horror mainly aims to make your world feel cursed (in the spooky good way). While being fully serverside, "From The Fog" isn't.

Q: Do you plan on developing this mod any further?
A: Yes, even tho this mod has been made as a submission for the 2025 Serverside Summer Modjam, I do plan to continue developing this mod further and adding more events and features over time.

Q: How were the odds for the events calculated?
A: I wanted everyone to experience each event at least twice in a two-week Minecraft faze, but at the same time, to not be spammed by the events. So I assumed that the most extreme two week minecraft faze will have 5 hours of playtime per day, which means 15 in game days or 360000 ticks and from that assumption I guesstimated the odds.

I made this mod as a submission for the 2025 Serverside Summer Modjam. I actually forgot about the jam until a week before the deadline, but I think the mod turned out pretty well in the end. It also forced me to learn new things and look at them from a different perspective. If you experience any bugs or other issues, please report them with a log.

Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (26.1.2). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.

Server-Side Horror officially supports fabric, forge, neoforge, quilt for Minecraft 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1. Note: Forge and Fabric mods are NOT cross-compatible – pick one loader and stick with it. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.

Server lagging with Server-Side Horror – how to optimize performance?

Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Server-Side Horror consumes the most tick time.
