About this Mod

Shippy Ships

Buy Me a Coffee

Shippy Ships mod introduces fully functional sailing vessels with smooth animations and gameplay mechanics designed for immersion and to feel believable while staying fun and intuitive.

Ship Types

Sailboat

Birch sailboat

A small, fast, and light vessel designed for shallow waters. It excels at cruising along coasts, rivers, and small canals. It can carry up to 3 passengers plus the pilot.

Cog (1.0.5+)

cog

A bulky ship offering plenty of storage space and a large health pool, at the cost of being somewhat slower than the sailboat. It can carry up to 11 passengers plus the pilot. Like the sailboat, it will struggle in deep-water storms, though its large HP pool gives you more time to find a way out.

Animations

  • While turning the ship will roll, the faster you go, the greater the roll.
  • The vessels sway simulating the waving of the sea, this subtle movment will increase during rain and thunderstorms
  • The rudder will visibly turn depending on your inputs.
  • The sail is fully animated and controllable with a smooth continuous opening and closing.

Mechanics

Controls

Controlling the ships is intuitive, press W to gradually deploy the sail, press S to retreat it. The speed and acceleration depend on the sail opening, so you can have full control of your ship.

Wood based modifiers

While building your vessel you should consider the wood that you intend to use. Hardwoods will make ships more durable but bulkier and less maneuverable, while softwoods will make faster, more responsive ships at the expense of durability.

Hardwoods

  • Mangrove
  • Dark Oak
  • Pale Oak
  • Acacia

Medium woods

  • Oak
  • Jungle
  • Birch

Softwoods

  • Cherry
  • Spruce
  • Bamboo

Storage

All the ships have some onboard storage that you can use to store your stuff during your journey around the seas of minecraft

Durability and sinking

Unlike Minecraft boats your ship will not break if it takes a hit, but it will get progressively more damaged. After losing half of the maximum health it will visibly and gradually start to tilt sideways and slow down.
If health drops to zero the ship will sink at the bottom of the sea! If there are any items inside the internal storage they will stay inside and you can recover them in the wreck.

Sunken ship

Storms and deep waters

Oceans are dangerous places, if you get caught by a thunderstorm in deep waters the ship will take damage over time. This mechanic is biome dependent and can be easily customized with a small datapack

Repairing

You can repair your ship right clicking with any planks, a plank will restore half a hearth

Crew

Crew matters! Every player or villager on board will increase the maneuverability and the max speed of your vessel!

Interactive building

To build your ship craft a ship builder with three logs, place it on the ground and right click it. Follow the instruction to assemble the ship in a multi step process! You will need to provide a certain amount of items right clicking on the ship builder to complete each step.
Once you've completed all the steps, the supports disappear. You can drive the ship into the water, it moves slowly on land, but it moves. There are different versions of the ship buider, craft the first one and then place it again in the crafting to change ship type. There is also also a decorative one, this does not have a block entity unlike the normal one.

Building site

Ramming (1.0.5+)

Ships can deal ramming damage, calculated based on the ship type and the relative speed between the ramming ship and the target.
Damage is distributed between the two entities according to the difference in their volumes, with two caps:

  • If the ramming ship's volume is at least twice as large as the rammed entity's, it absorbs no damage and the rammed entity takes it all.
  • If the ramming ship's volume is less than twice the rammed entity's, the ramming ship receives all the damage instead.

Configuration

  • The wood groups are data driven, so modded woods can be added easily with a small datapack. For example external_mod:pine_wood can be added to the spruce group and used for the construction of a spruce ship.
  • The items used for building the ships are also data driven.
  • The quantity of items used in each individual step is adjustable in the config file.
  • The loot table of items dropped after the destruction of the wreak is data driven
  • The deepwaters list of biomes is data driven

Future plans

I will add bigger ships specialized for deep waters. These ships will be more resistant to storms and faster in deep waters, on the other hand they will be slower in shallow waters. They will have more crew and storage space, but they will be more expensive to build

Frequently Asked Questions

Shippy Ships server crashes on startup – what to do?

Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (26.1.2). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.

Is Shippy Ships compatible with fabric and forge and neoforge?

Shippy Ships officially supports fabric, forge, neoforge for Minecraft 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1. Note: Forge and Fabric mods are NOT cross-compatible – pick one loader and stick with it. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.

Server lagging with Shippy Ships – how to optimize performance?

Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Shippy Ships consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
