Spatial Difficulty
Making local difficulty based on distance from spawn instead of time in a chunk.
About this Mod
Spatial Difficulty.
Solve three birds with one stone! Give the world an inherent choice of risk and reward, give players a reason to stick together, and prevent new players from joining and immediately dying to a skeleton with an enchanted bow.
Summary
This mod repurposes the vanilla 'local difficulty' mechanic to be determined by distance from spawn instead of time in a chunk (capped at the same values as vanilla). The mechanic is otherwise identical--causing mobs to gain more armor and weapons, have more enchantments, and special versions (i.e. potion spiders).
Config
The rate of difficulty growth can be edited in config, and the center will always be worldspawn.
Compatibility
There should be minimal performance impact. Will have incompatibilities with any mod that changes how local difficulty works, but that should be basically none of them. Should work entirely serverside, but if not on client the debug screen will show the incorrect difficulty.

Spatial Difficulty server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong forge version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.20.1). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is Spatial Difficulty compatible with forge?
Spatial Difficulty officially supports forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with Spatial Difficulty – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Spatial Difficulty consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
