THE LEGEND OF MOHINI

In Sri Lankan folklore, Mohini is one of the most famous and feared female ghosts

The Appearance
The legend typically follows a specific pattern known by almost everyone in Sri Lanka:

The Disguise: She appears as a beautiful young woman dressed in a white saree. She is usually seen standing alone in a deserted area late at night.

The Infant: Crucially, she is almost always seen cradling a small baby in her arms.

The Trap:

As a traveler (usually a man) passes by, she will approach him and piteously ask him to hold her baby for just a moment while she adjusts her saree or "diya redda" (bathing cloth).

The Transformation: The moment the man takes the baby into his arms, Mohini transforms. Her beautiful face turns into a terrifying, demonic mask with fangs and bloodshot eyes. The baby often vanishes or turns into a demonic entity.

The Outcome: It is said that those who encounter her either die of a heart attack from pure terror or fall into a deep, incurable madness. Some legends say she kills her victims and consumes them.
