Mod integration
The mod provides custom Jade and WTHIT handling for certain blocks, such as the Composter. It also has integration with JEI and REI for piston crafting, composting, and an in-game wiki.
Integration with the Thermal Series, Create, and Farmers Delight is planned, when those mods become available.
Versions for 1.10.2 and below have integration features with Pam's HarvestCraft, WAILA, JEI/NEI, Immersive Engineering, and Thermal Foundation and Expansion.
FAQ
Why?
In-game veganism is simply a playstyle that I prefer, in that I think survival games offer a unique way to explore vegan ethics that the real world doesn't provide. For example, attempting to adhere to veganism within Minecraft leads to weird/interesting questions like, "Is it really self-defense to kill a mob if I'm semi-responsible for mobs being able to spawn at all?". It can also encourage non-standard behavior like building a weapon that does the least amount of damage possible.
Do I have to play as a vegan if I install this?
No, this mod simply aims to allow veganism to be a viable option in Minecraft. If you don't choose to adhere to veganism while using this mod, it'll still do a few nice things for you:
- Allows for alternate (hopefully interesting) methods of obtaining mob drops
- Gives uses to various vanilla Minecraft blocks/items that didn't really have a use before (ferns, sunflowers, spruce wood, sandstone, etc)
Should I go vegan (in real life)?
Probably.
Goals before v1.0.0
- Balance
- Add features for all remaining mob drops
- Make the mod configurable
- Add as much mod integration as possible
Forks
This mod was not updated for 1.11 through 1.19. Forks were made for the following versions in that time:
- Vegan Life for 1.12
- Vegan Alternative for 1.11
If you are aware of others, let me know and I will add them to the list.
Legacy features
The following features that existed in older versions have been removed:
- White Ink as a bone meal alternative in dyeing. Removed in 1.20.2 due to vanilla including several ways to create white dye without killing mobs.
Misc
You are welcome to add this to any modpack you'd like.
The original idea for the mod came from wha-ha-ha on Reddit.

The Vegan Option officially supports forge, neoforge for Minecraft 1.20.4, 1.20.2, 1.10.2. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with The Vegan Option – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if The Vegan Option consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge.
