Optimize Minecraft Server Performance

Lag is one of the most common issues with Minecraft servers. Here you'll find practical tips to improve your server's performance.

Server Type: Use Paper

Paper is an optimized fork of Spigot and offers significantly better performance than Vanilla or Spigot. If you're still using Vanilla or Spigot, switching to Paper is worthwhile.

Reduce View Distance

View distance is one of the biggest performance factors. In server.properties:

  • view-distance=8 - Good compromise between performance and gameplay

  • simulation-distance=6 - Reduces the simulated distance
  • Paper-Specific Optimizations

    In paper-world-defaults.yml:

  • delay-chunk-unloads-by: 10s - Chunks are unloaded with delay

  • max-auto-save-chunks-per-tick: 8 - Limits save operations per tick

  • entity-per-chunk-save-limit - Limits saved entities per chunk
  • Reduce Unnecessary Entities

  • Limit the number of animals and monsters per chunk

  • Clean up unnecessary items regularly (e.g. with ClearLag)

  • Reduce spawn rates in bukkit.yml
  • Right-Size Your RAM

  • Too little RAM leads to frequent garbage collection and lag spikes

  • Too much RAM can also cause longer GC pauses

  • Mado Hosting uses optimized startup flags (Aikar's Flags) automatically
  • Use Mado AI Crash Analysis

Our AI system automatically detects performance issues and crashes. Regularly check the suggestions in the dashboard under "Crash Analysis".
