About this Mod
Have you ever wanted more interesting minecraft terrain?
no? oh... okay then :/
Anywaaaay, Fractal Terrain is a mod that fixes just that! :)
How the mod works
fractal terrain uses a deep learning model to generate its terrain.
Don´t worry, the model was trained using Mother Nature's beautyfull landscapes captured in the form of DEMs via satelite data and other means. Most importantly, not a single image is stolen from an artist and all data is permited for use.
Instalation
Make sure you run this mod with java 21, (even though 1.20.1 can run on java 17) the recommended java instalation that modrinth provides is good.
Once you downloaded the mod, you will also have to download the models' weights via a datapack in this link: download datapack
Note: the file is large (1GB) because the network has a lot of parameters
Another note: the mod will not work without this datapack
just drag and drop this into the datapacks folder before creating your world and you are good to go!
Features
This mod has two settings, one for large terrain and another for smaller scale terrain.
- The large generates terrain up to 1800 blocks in height
- The small one is a scaled down version that generates up to 400 blocks in height
In this mod, you can experience terrain that seems eroded in a more realistic manner, but also more creative types of landforms.
Planned features
Fractal terrain is in its alpha stages so there is a LOT waiting to be added. Among other things this includes:
- sinuousssss riversssss
- compatibility with biome mods
- reworking biome placement
- realistic temperature zones and place tectonic placement
- rock strata
DISCLAIMER
Look, this mod is still in its alpha stages so expect a lot of bugs, poor performance and wackey behaviour in general. Anything that is related to strucure/biome location is completly broken in the mod and can result in a crash. So, cartographers and ender eyes are broken.
Don´t worry, all of this will be fixed in subsequent versions as I release them.
This mod is supposed to be an improvement on terrainDiffusion https://github.com/xandergos/terrain-diffusion-mc for biome, river networks and geologic placement of rocks.

FractalTerrain server crashes on startup – what to do?
Most common cause: wrong fabric version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 4 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.20.1). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.
Is FractalTerrain compatible with fabric?
FractalTerrain officially supports fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.
Server lagging with FractalTerrain – how to optimize performance?
Recommended RAM: 6 GB (per 5 players). Use /spark profiler to check if FractalTerrain consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
