Modular backpacks focuses entirely on one backpack and making that the best it can be.
Instead of direct upgrades, backpacks use a swappable module system that lets you build your own backpack tailored to your playstyle.
Enchantments can even change how your backpack functions entirely.

This mod is primarily designed to be an in-depth and (somewhat) balanced alternative to other backpack mods, with some more Vanilla-esque design mannerisms.

Features

Backpack

  • Backpack with 9 slots of storage and 4 module slots
  • Each module slotted shows visually on your backpack for you and others
  • Dye and Trim support for backpacks
  • Backpack dye color changes the color of its GUI
  • Elytras, Create Goggles, Create Backtanks, Spyglasses, and Jukeboxes are supported in module slots

8 different modules

  • Pouch - standard storage module

  • Farming Pot - allows for portable crop growth

  • Quiver - stores arrows and imbues them with the effects of inserted suspicious stew

  • Buckler - provides armor to make up for the lack of a chestplate

  • Sack - can store one type of item in bulk

  • Cooking Pot - smelts items very slowly but at no fuel cost

  • Echo Pouch - module equivalent of an ender chest (can hold shulker boxes, unlike other modules)

  • Climbing Gear - allows you to climb on and jump off of walls

(most modules have at least 1 upgrade)

4 Backpack Enchantments

  • Linking - worn backpack stays on death (treasure loot found in Ancient and End Cities)
  • Back Protection - significantly reduces damage from behind
  • Rationing - extra hunger you don't have room for is stored and fed back to you when out of combat
  • Packing - your base backpack inventory now works like a very large bundle

Frequently Asked Questions

Modular Backpacks server crashes on startup – what to do?

Most common cause: wrong forge version or insufficient RAM. Check the server log (latest.log) for "OutOfMemoryError" or "Mixin" errors. With Mado Hosting: ensure at least 3 GB RAM is allocated and the loader matches the mod version (1.20.1). You can switch loaders with one click in the panel.

Is Modular Backpacks compatible with forge?

Modular Backpacks officially supports forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. The Mado dashboard automatically detects incompatible loader combinations.

Server lagging with Modular Backpacks – how to optimize performance?

Recommended RAM: 4 GB (per 8 players). Use /spark profiler to check if Modular Backpacks consumes the most tick time. Common fixes: reduce server view-distance to 8-10, install "performant" or "starlight" as supplementary mods on Forge. With Mado Hosting, your server runs on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores for minimal latency.
