About this Mod

An extra mod for the wonderful Realistic Horse Genetics that allows horses to spurt for a short period of time.

Note: This mod is still in an unfinished, beta state. Bugs and glitches are to be expected!

Details and controls

Spurting using the sprint key

When you spurt*, your horse will temporarily gain a small increase in speed. A timer that shows how long you can spurt for will tick down, and when this reaches zero, spurting will be disabled. If you stop spurting, whether by letting go of the spurt key or letting the timer reach zero, there is a short cooldown before you can spurt again. Remounting will let you reset the cooldown.

The amount that horses can spurt by, and the length that they can spurt for, are determined by the stats of the horse, and are shown above your hotbar. As the name of the mod suggests, this is tiered towards those who desire Minecraft horse-racing to be something more than just "the highest speed stat wins".

*By default, the sprint key should be Left Control, but this can be remapped in Minecraft's settings under the Movement section.

Spurting via whipping

By left-clicking with the Whip item while riding, you can whip the ground and gain a large increase in speed for a short period of time. Whipping can only be done when your horse has between 400 and 200 blocks of distance remaining, depending on your distance aptitude (see below). The GUI tells you when whipping is available, and a sound effect will play when you've whipped successfully (also viewable in subtitles as "Whip crackles").

Distance aptitudes

Different horses will have different distances, between 500 and 1450 blocks, that they can travel for before they get tired. When your distance remaining reaches 0, your horse will no longer be able to sprint until you remount them.
You can take a look at which aptitude your horse is best suited for by right-clicking them with a piece of paper:

  • Sprint: between 500 and 600 blocks
  • Mile: between 600 and 800 blocks
  • Medium: between 800 and 1000 blocks
  • Long: between 1000 and 1450 blocks

Track aptitudes

When right-clicking a horse with paper, you will also get the track type the horse is best suited for. Turf means the horse performs best on grass blocks, and Dirt means the horse performs best on dirt/coarse dirt/sand. Travelling on the wrong track type gives a penalty to speed, so be sure to race on the correct track type!

Stone is a neutral block that works with all track aptitudes. Slabs can be placed on top of stone to make them not slow your horse down.

Speedometer and Timer

The Speedometer and Timer are two items that can assist you when judging your horses for racing:

  • When the Speedometer is equipped in your inventory, you will be able to see your horse's speed when mounted.
  • Right click the Timer to start it when mounted. Right click again to stop it, and you will receive a rough estimate of your distance, time, and average speed.

Currently, these two items are unobtainable in Survival Mode without commands.

Installing

Like with any other mod, drop the jar file into the mods folder. Requires Realistic Horse Genetics to work.

Issues and comments

  • For some reason, the sprint mode can get stuck on. If that happens, run /horsesprint toggle to force-toggle it off. This will also reset the cooldown timer.
  • When reloading the world/server, or when teleporting the horse, the spurt speeds and times are recalculated. I have been asked not to fix this, so it's a feature now. In future, this will be incorportated into a mood system that further determines the horse's spurt stats.
  • Depending on if people want, I can release a version of the mod that's compatible with vanilla horses, and even donkeys/mules.

Credits

  • MCreator for letting a noob to Minecraft modding such as myself create and release their first actual mod.
  • Realistic Horse Genetics for their wonderful and incredible horses and breeding system.
  • My good friend DoctorWraith for introducing me to the more hands-on code aspect of Minecraft modding and helping me integrate with RHG.
  • And finally, the folks over on Keibacraft, the horse-racing server this mod was designed for, for helping me test and tweak the mod. Thank you also to Vae Victis, the horse in the icon photo, and the winner of the very first All-Stars Grand Prix.
