About this Mod

This mod is an atmospheric horror mod. With it, entities occasionally mimic players' voices. Sometimes, these entities don't get it quite right; other times, you can't tell the difference. The mod's goal is to enhance the experience of other mods. It plays best with other people.

It works by occasionally recording and saving clips of players talking to your computer and then later playing those clips back to players, sometimes with special sound-processing effects applied. This mod does not use generative AI or voice cloning, and all clips stay within your Minecraft Server. Additionally, as of Mimicked 2.0.0, the full source code is publicly available for inspection, although the project remains All Rights Reserved.

What to Expect

Voice mimicking occurs on average every five minutes per player nearby by default. Feel free to tune it however you like with the extensive selection of custom configurations (see more below). This mod, by default, prefers hostile mobs as sources of mimicry, but if there are none nearby, any living entity is allowed. This too can be changed with the extensive selection of custom configurations.

Mod Sides

This mod works client-side only, server-side only, and both. If you choose to use it only on the client, entities will only say things you have already heard, and nearby players (other than you) cannot hear them (and may think you are crazy). This option is designed for use with horror multiplayer servers that do not have voice mimicking installed, but you still want it.

If you choose to use it server-side only, these limitations do not apply. This option is for reducing friction on multiplayer servers (or if you want to scare your friends without them knowing it is coming).

If you use it on both the client and the server, you can switch the preferServerSide config option to false, and entities can mimic players so that only you can hear them.

While this mod has client-side or server-side only functionality, it cannot function at all unless the Simple Voice Chat mod is installed on both the client and the server. If you run into any issues with loading this mod, make sure the Simple Voice Chat mod is fully updated.

Custom Configuration

This mod has extensive configuration, but all settings have been specifically tuned so that customization is not required. Custom configuration has everything from controlling what entities can mimic you to how often it happens to even what added SFX are applied. Custom configuration also lets you enable a feature called Overdrive, which turns voice mimicking into overdrive when certain entities are nearby. This feature is meant for giving your favorite horror entities voice-mimicking abilities while keeping the general atmosphere buildup.

The configuration options are split into two files located in your config folder: mimicked-common.toml and mimicked-sfx.toml. Both configuration files are shared between the server and the client, and currently, there is no feature to separate them when hosting your own world from the Singleplayer menu. Below is an overview of what kinds of options are available. To see the actual options, you can look at the config files in your config folder.

Mimicked Common

This configuration file controls everything but settings tied to SFX. It controls things like player recording (how often clips are recorded, how long each clip should be, and how many can be stored at once), audio playback (how often, by what entities, etc), overdrive, and even the option to disable hearing your own voice.

Mimicked SFX

This configuration file controls when, how, and how often SFX are applied. There are also config options for controlling how many SFX can be overlaid. This mod comes with a variety of SFX bundles like radio interference, audio reversal, audio shuffle, and pitch variation. Each SFX preset has a weighting option. This controls how likely the particular SFX is to be chosen out of the others. Some SFX bundles have additional options to change how the SFX is applied, like how much of the audio to apply the effect to, how much to shift the pitch, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mimicked need to be installed on the Minecraft server?

No. Modrinth marks Mimicked as unsupported on the server side. Install it only in your local Minecraft mods folder. Your server can remain unchanged unless the mod page lists an additional dependency.

Which version and loader does Mimicked require?

Use a file for forge, neoforge and your exact Minecraft version. Supported versions include 1.21.1, 1.20.1, 1.19.2. Files for different loaders are not interchangeable.

Mimicked is not working – what should I check?

First check the Minecraft version, loader version and required dependencies. Put the .jar file in your local .minecraft/mods folder and remove older duplicates. Because this mod is client-side, adding server RAM will not fix it.
