About this Modpack

L4J Modpack is a recreation of the discontinued console edition of Minecraft, developed by 4J studios from 2009 to 2019, adapted and improved with various quality of life and performance mods.

Main gameplay features :

Legacy4J

This modpack is centered around the Legacy4J mod, which completely changes the user interface, gameplay mechanics, sounds and graphics to be similar if not identical to what console edition Minecraft had.

  • All UIs and menus now use console sounds and style
  • Attack cooldown removed
  • Gamma settings
  • Old textures (Non legacy edition blocks, such as warped nylium, will not be adapted and will require a programmer art style resource pack, non included here.)
  • Elytra camera roll
All of these features can be disabled in the mod config.

Legacy4J also comes with full controller support, no need to install Controlify, i experienced compatibility issues when both mods were used.

MiniMega

MiniMega is a mod for Legacy4J that adds the 2016 minigames in the title screen. It is currently being developed, with Lobby and Glide being fully implemented and other minigames being worked on.
Not all maps are present in the Glide minigame, but the classic/free ones are fully operational.

/!\ The mod creates a world, do not open it, the game can crash.

Mash-up packs

Mash-up packs were massive packs including skins (you can equip them thanks to the Legacy Skins mod), the resource pack itself, worlds (you can create and explore them thanks to the Legacy Worlds mod), and Glide maps.

Main quality of life features :

I've added some popular mods to make the experience more pleasant and suitable to more people. Here is a list of the most impactful ones.

  • Appleskin (information about food, better hud)
  • uku's QoL mods, like the armor hud and potion counter
  • SimpleHUD, a non obstrusive mod displaying FPS, ping and more
  • e4mc, allowing players to host worlds like in console edition (use at your own risk)
  • Clean F3
  • Clear lava, water and powder snow
  • client time mods, allowing you to see the time of the day and control it (only rendering, will not affect the actual time)
  • Chat utils, such as chat patches, chat heads, and no chat reports, mods that allow you to have an extended chat with additional info, player heads display, and a protection against message reporting (will display a warning in unsafe servers)
  • Mouse Tweaks

Rendering, graphics :

Here are the mods i added to tweak minecraft a bit more and make it more flexible :

  • Distant horizons (You may not find the options while Legacy4J UI changes are active)
  • Iris shaders
  • OptiBoxes (equivalent to optifine, allows you to use custom skyboxes)
  • No darkness effect (I hate the warden)
  • Model Gap Fix (Fixes the gaps in some item models)

Performance :

This modpack used Fabulously Optimized as its base to provide a nicer experience on lower end hardware.

/!\ The modpack isnt very stable and can crash by simply adding a resource pack.

2

Install Modpack in Dashboard

Open the modpack browser in the dashboard, search for "L4J" and click "Install". The fabric loader and Minecraft 1.21.8 are configured automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

L4J server crashes or won't start – what to do?

Most common causes: insufficient RAM or wrong fabric loader. Check latest.log for "OutOfMemoryError" → increase RAM to at least 8 GB. For "Mixin" or "ClassNotFoundException" errors: modpack version and loader don't match. With Mado Hosting, loader and Minecraft version are auto-configured on modpack install – preventing most startup issues.

How much RAM does a L4J server really need?

Minimum 6 GB, recommended 8 GB for stable performance. per 5 players. Important: Minecraft modpacks need more RAM than vanilla – plan extra per additional player. With Mado Hosting, you can scale RAM up live at any time without data loss (from €7.800000000000001/month).

Can I add custom mods to L4J without conflicts?

Yes, but check compatibility: only use mods for the same loader (fabric) and same Minecraft version (1.21.8). Common issues: ID conflicts with recipe mods and incompatible coremod versions. The Mado dashboard mod browser only shows compatible mods and warns about known conflicts.

L4J server lagging – performance tips

1) Increase RAM to 8 GB+. 2) Reduce server view-distance to 8 (server.properties). 3) Pre-generate chunks with the "Chunky" plugin. 4) Use /spark profiler to check which mods consume the most tick time. With Mado Hosting, all servers run on NVMe SSDs with dedicated CPU cores – eliminating hardware as a bottleneck.
